New Year Bible Reading
Through January 2024 we’re calling all the church to have a go at reading the Bible each day. So we’re printing some Bible notes that we’ll be encouraging us all to use.
Why?
God calls all Christians to in some way engage with his word each day. David says we’re to “meditate on it day and night” (Psalm 1:4). Jesus said our souls need God’s word as much as our bodies need food (Matt 4:4).
Our verse for the year says we’re to crave it “like newborn babies crave milk.” This isn’t legalism anymore that saying you need to listen to your spouse or housemate each day is. We love God and so want to listen to him.
Of course we can all read in different ways. Some get a daily text, others listen to a daily YouTube clip, some have their own Bible notes. But for one month we think it’ll be really good to all do the same thing, because we think it will help us with…
-
Starting a healthy habit. It takes around 3 weeks to get into a new routine. So we hope giving one focused month to this may lead to a year of reading that’ll take us deeper with Jesus.
-
Keeping going together. Perhaps you have a New Year's resolution to diet or exercise. Generally it’s far easier to keep that up when others are doing the same. So we hope we will really help each other (especially those not used to Bible reading) if we all commit to doing the same notes.
-
Talking about God’s word. “How did you get on with the reading this morning?” “I didn’t get some of it, but I found such and such really good.” “I didn’t manage to read today; can you tell me what I missed?” We don’t want any guilt or pressure. But hope that these sorts of conversations will become natural and normal for us.
-
Togetherness. Doing more than just Sunday mornings together should help our sense of being one family. Some may want to link up with another Christian in church either to read the notes together in person or to communicate daily through WhatsApp. If you’d like the Elders to link you up with someone please get in contact.
“As newborn babies crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” 1 Peter 2.2-3
Free notes are available at the way into church.
