For your progress and joy in the faith
It’s the biggest privilege to have been the pastor at the Tab for 3 years. A verse that comes to mind is Philippians 1.25. Paul says his continuing ministry is “for your progress and joy in the faith.”
I have sermons, services and small groups to deliver. I pray, prepare, plan programs. There’s visiting, reaching out, hosting, training, leading, organising. But what all this is for is that individually and together as Christians we’d “progress and have joy in the faith.” This is my heart.
“Progress” reminds us that God has begun a good work in Christians, but it’s not finished yet (Philippians 1.6) – certainly not in me. Please as you pray for me as pastor pray for my progress.
What encourages me (and the elders) more than anything is signs of progress as:
-
Someone trusts God with something difficult in their lives.
-
Someone begins to read the Bible regularly.
-
Someone prays in a prayer meeting for a first time.
-
Someone nervously gives a first talk in a kids club.
-
Someone takes on an addiction or sinful behaviour.
-
Someone witnesses, encourages, welcomes, cares for the sick…
God is progressing us. It’s not always spectacular, often it’s slow, just like the plants growing in our garden in spring. But like that, it is wonderful. I hope you can see what I can see in each other. Progress.
“Joy” reminds us that following Jesus is a deeply joyful thing. Part of growing as a Christian is discovering more joy.
-
Joy even in hardships
-
Joy in singing, serving and sacrificing
-
Joy especially in all Jesus is, has done, and has promised us.
God wants all of us to have this joy. Not just that we outwardly look like keen Christians but that that flows from inner joy. You can’t fake that. It’s God’s work. And it’s great to see among us.
“Progress and joy.” That’s what a pastor’s work is about. It’s what (on a good day) get’s me out of bed in the morning. It what lies behind everything in this next year ahead.
